The big one: direct (pure) vitamin C. L-ascorbic acid and copper ions are a poor combination in theory, as the copper can destabilize the vitamin C. Worth trying if: you want a gentle, evidence-supported serum for the appearance of firmness and texture, you cannot tolerate retinoids, or you want to add a second “appearance of aging” ingredient alongside a retinoid routine.
Fine to skip if: you are under about 25 with no specific texture concerns, or your budget only allows one active, in which case sunscreen plus a retinoid or a well-chosen peptide serum is a better first spend.
What to look for when buying
- GHK-Cu (or “copper tripeptide-1”) named explicitly on the ingredient list, ideally high up it.
- A visible blue tint, which suggests a meaningful amount of the copper complex.
